How to Improve Your Own Business Writing

I’m learning more about blogging all the time. It’s important, they say, to choose a specific purpose for a blog and stay true to that specialization. More people are likely to find you, and the blog is more likely to help your customers. To that end, I’ve decided to make this blog about helping you improve your own business writing. The more I can help you with day-to-day writing tasks on your plate, the more likely it is you will think of me when you don’t have time, need an expert or need a fresh perspective. My blog will offer not only ways to improve your writing and make your messages more effective, but it also will give you insight into marketing in a new age that includes blogs, social networking and selective use of traditional p.r. and advertising.

Watch this space for info about grammar rules, tricks to get people to listen/read, ways to save time writing, the secrets of using language to sell, and more.

Here’s your first lesson: consider launching a blog. I have found that it not only provides needed material for targeted clients and colleagues of mine, but the process of writing it has helped me focus my business. Much like goal setting or a business plan, putting it down on paper helps you coalesce your ideas into a clear vision. It also gives you a useful forum for practicing business writing.

How do you launch a blog? It’s not as hard as you might think. First choose a host. I use Xanga.com, but there also is WordPress.com, LiveJournal.com, Blog.com, Blogger.com and others. Google “blog hosts” to see more. Each site includes instructions for creating and maintaining your blog. Begin by choosing a specialty related to your business. It should be something that is truly useful to people who either purchase your product/service or influence those who do. Set a schedule of posts and stick to it as much as possible. Provide truly useful information. Let your personality come through to make your posts more interesting and unique than others on the same topic. Then keep it up! Want to know more? Until next time…write well and say what you mean for better business!
