Writing is an activity that does take some focus. Everybody has a different way of focusing. I used to study best in the college union, with lots of noise around me to keep the unused parts of my brain filled. The chaos allowed me to use one part of my brain to do assignments, without the risk of thoughts spilling out into nonconstructive topics that would distract me.

Some people have to have extreme quiet to focus. In college, hoards of people went to the stacks at Love Library, and the trick was to find a corner where no other solitude-seeking studier was camped out.

The key is to find the situation that works best for you. That can be tricky, believe it or not. It sounds simple. But human nature makes us too quick to think it doesn’t really matter.  Or that we SHOULD be able to focus on our writing anywhere. Or that we don’t have the time to travel to a spot that would work better.  It DOES matter. Some of the things you write have great impact on your work, your family, your image, your belief in yourself.

So my advice is to give yourself permission to make location important. And then just do it. When you get ready to do the writing, set up your environment the way you need it to be, so you can create your greatest success!
